Noah Syndergaard Says Purpose Pitch in World Series Doesn't Warrant Retaliation

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard said Wednesday that he doesn't believe the purpose pitch he hurled at Alcides Escobar in Game 3 of the World Series justifies retaliation from the Kansas City Royals during their upcoming rematch on Opening Night at Kauffman Stadium. 

Syndergaard rankled the Royals last fall by throwing a 98-mph fastball up and in to Escobar to open Game 3, the only meeting the Mets won. A Newsday story published Tuesday reported that the Royals were still upset by the incident and "have been quietly signaling their intent to seek retribution" against the Mets on Sunday. 

"I don't think they're too fond of me, but as far as retaliation goes, I really don't know what they're going to retaliate against," Syndergaard said following the Mets' 12-1 loss to the Washington Nationals. "All I did was establish the inner part of the plate. So I don't know what this whole retaliation talk is all about. But it's going to be an interesting time.

"I simply threw a pitch on the inside corner. Elevated. A purpose pitch. I don't really see how any retaliation could be made."

This shouldn't even be news, But hey, it's still spring training so the media is desperate for headlines and thanks to the stupidity of interleague play, the Royals and Mets are facing each other to start off the season. Bottom line, Syndergaard did nothing wrong but establish the inside of the plate with that pitch which asa pitcher is something he's probably long been taught to do. He didn't hit anyone and he certainly didn't show anybody up, which would've really dumb when you consider that the Mets were down two games to nothing at the time. Instead he made a statement with that pitch and went on to pitch a great game to get his team back in the series, which in case any Royal is really thinking about retaliating by the way...Kansas City went on to win. So there's your payback right there. Now it's time to move on.

Matt Harvey Won't Miss Opening Day Despite Bladder Infection

Matt Harvey Has Non-baseball Medical Issue, Could Miss Opening Day

New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey is dealing with an undisclosed medical issue that may place his Opening Day start on Sunday in jeopardy.

General manager Sandy Alderson declined to specify the issue, other than to say it was not related to an elbow or shoulder or anything else orthopedic. Harvey reported the issue to Mets personnel early Monday after a symptom unexpectedly arose, Alderson added.

"It's a non-baseball medical issue that we have to address," Alderson said after Monday's 3-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. "It came up this morning as far as I know. There will be some follow-up tests and consultation that will take place over the next couple of days."

Asked if there is any gravity to the undisclosed issue, Alderson added: "I think it's a little early to attach any level of concern. ... I think we need to wait for more medical information before we decide it's of concern, or great concern, or no concern."

Harvey will be scratched from Tuesday's Grapefruit League start against the Miami Marlins. That had been slated to be his final tuneup for Opening Day opposite Kansas City Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez at Kauffman Stadium in a rematch of Game Nos. 1 and 5 of the World Series.

The fact that Harvey could miss his Opening Day start and the Mets aren't saying why is a really bad sign.

Of course, this game never should've been close because the Chiefs are that bad and all the blame for that goes to Bret Favre and his 3 picks. Great games by Leon Washington and Laveraneus Coles, but the "Bad Bret Favre" has been showing up a little too much to my liking this season.

Raiders 16, Jets 13

Bottom line, after a great comeback, Favre and the Jets had four chances to win this damn game in overtime and didn't come close to getting decent yardage for even a field-goal attempt. Bad loss, really bad.

Does This Seem Familiar?

Yes, I understand that after the miracle they pulled in the 2004 ALCS the Boston Red Sox should never be counted out. But still. Down 7-0? Going into the bottom of the 7th? Unbelievable.

Larry Johnson Is A Coward

Third time arrested for assaulting a woman? That's a straight-up punk who shouldn't be allowed to put on an NFL jersey again. Can't believe Herm Edwards would allow a guy like this to play on his team:

Kansas City running back Larry Johnson has been charged with assault, his third such brush with the law since he joined the Chiefs.

Johnson, 28, was charged with a similar assault for allegedly pushing a woman at a Kansas City nightclub on February 24.

The National Football League player is scheduled to appear in court on December 3 and faces a maximum jail term of six months and a 500-dollar fine.

The 26-year-old complainant accused Johnson of pushing the left side of her head with an open hand and saying "don't touch me" as he passed them in a crowd.

Johnson faced a similar situation in 2005 when a woman accused him of pushing her to the ground at a Kansas City bar. That charge was dropped when the woman failed to appear in court.

In 2003, Johnson agreed to a domestic violence diversion program after he was charged with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor domestic battery for allegedly waving a gun during a dispute with a former girlfriend.

Cowboys Can't Win With Wade Phillips

Of course, I'm not blaming Phillips for Tony Romo being out a month with a broken finger and considering that the Giants went on to win the Super Bowl, it's hard to fault Phillips anymore for his team's home playoff loss last season, but there's still something about Wade Phillips that just speaks to his inability to get the most out of team. I saw it for years when he coached the Bills as they choked in every single big game and his vanilla personality just doesn't seem to inspire people. How the Cowboys do in Romo's absense will be a true reflection on Phillips' ability to coach.

Anybody But The Phillies

Really now, I thought after they put a through whipping on the Cubs and with Rafael Furcal back, the Dodgers would take out the Phillies in 5, at the most 6. But now with the Phils taking the first two games and nobody hitting besides Manny Ramirez, I'm starting to wonder if L.A. can even get a game. Bottom line, Joe Torre needs to wake his team up and fast, starting tomorrow against Jamie Moyer or else this series will be over before it started. And I'll have to look forward to a sad baseball season get even worse with the Phillies in the World Series.

Pacman Jones Punches Out Bodyguard

To think this latest incident happened on the same day Commissioner Goodell said that he was "rooting" for him:

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones was involved in a fight with one of his bodyguards, according to Dallas police, the night before attending a previously scheduled team meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

No one was arrested and no one will be charged in connection with the fight late Tuesday night at The Joule, an upscale downtown Dallas hotel.

Jones missed all of last season for Tennessee while serving an NFL suspension for off-field incidents. Goodell fully reinstated the cornerback, acquired by Dallas in a trade in April, just before the season opener.

Before meeting with the Cowboys on Wednesday, Goodell said to reporters in San Antonio: "Adam knows how much emphasis I put on making sure that he makes good choices going forward, that he avoids situations where he can reflect poorly on himself, the Cowboys or the NFL. So far he seems to have been able to do that very effectively."

Hmmm.....turns out the bodyguard has "chosen" not to press charges. Yeah, right. Can anyone say bribery?
