The Mets Should Not Call Up Amed Rosario

Sandy Alderson hears you loud and clear, Mets fans.

The Mets general manager is aware that your desire to see top prospect Amed Rosario in Flushing is at an all-time high, especially with second baseman Neil Walker (left hamstring) hitting the disabled list on Thursday.

After all, it's hard to ignore Rosario's dominant Triple-A stat line: .333 batting average, seven home runs and 45 RBIs.

But Alderson doesn't want to rush the 21-year-old shortstop's development.

"First of all, we have some good players here," Alderson said ahead of Thursday's series-opener with the NL East leading Nationals. "(Jose) Reyes is playing currently at shortstop, (Astrubal) Cabrera is coming back. It's not like we have a big hole in our lineup. If not more importantly, we review Rosario as a possible long-term answer for us."

Finally, something that I can agree with when it comes Mets management: leaving Amed Rosario alone and not bowing to pressure from fans and the media to call him up. I don't care how great Rosario is racking it up in Triple-A, it's still Triple-A and frankly speaking, even if Rosario got called up and he continues to hit like he's doing now, that ain't saving the 2017 Mets. Because injuries have just about killed this team.

From Noah Syndergaard to Yoenis Cespedes to Steven Matz to Lucas Duda to Seth Lugo (and now the trio of Neil Walker, Matt Harvey and Juan Lagares are each heading to the DL too), this team just can't catch a break. And no potentially superstar SS is going to save them. Better to just let the veteran Asdrubal Cabrera play out what's left of his contract this year, hope against hope that Jose Reyes has something left in the tank and that Cespedes along with the rest of the pitching staff can stay healthy for the rest of the year. Then too, there's always Brandon Nimmo...I'm just saying.

If Matt Harvey Wants To Keep Dating Supermodels...

....he needs to start taking baseball more seriously and start pitching better, because once those big checks stop coming, let's just say that they won't be sticking around just for his good looks.

Matt Harvey will most likely make three more starts before spring training is over, giving him more time to fully put behind him the thoracic outlet syndrome that undermined his 2016 season and required surgery last July.

So what Harvey has shown in his three starts this spring should be evaluated with that in mind. Two of the starts have not looked very good in the box score. As for his pitches, his fastball, so far, is slower than in the past, but at the same time he has displayed some encouraging off-speed pitches.

Even though the thoracic outlet syndrome he had last season — a condition in which nerves or blood vessels are compressed between bones in the neck and upper torso — undermined his command and endurance, his fastball still averaged 94.5 miles per hour, according to FanGraphs.com. The year before, his first back from Tommy John surgery, Harvey averaged a career-high 95.9 m.p.h.

Hey, coming back from a major injury and with the way things are going so far in spring training, I think it's safe to say that Harvey is behind Syndergaard, deGrom, Matz and Lugo on the starting rotation depth chart. Either way, it's good to know that Harvey's personal life hasn't suffered.

Sorry, but I don't buy that it's time to 'panic' about Harvey--not yet anyway. It's still May for chrissakes and the Mets are only 2.5 games out of first place as I write this. I'm more worried about my leadoff hitter batting below .200, David Wright's alarming strikeout rate and why the Mets don't release the awful Eric Campbell and call up Dilson Herrera already. If Harvey's ERA is still above 5 come say mid-July and the Mets are...say more than 7 or 8 out of first place, then I'll start panicking. Till then everyone needs to calm down and let Harvey figure it out.

Matt Harvey Has Non-baseball Medical Issue, Could Miss Opening Day

New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey is dealing with an undisclosed medical issue that may place his Opening Day start on Sunday in jeopardy.

General manager Sandy Alderson declined to specify the issue, other than to say it was not related to an elbow or shoulder or anything else orthopedic. Harvey reported the issue to Mets personnel early Monday after a symptom unexpectedly arose, Alderson added.

"It's a non-baseball medical issue that we have to address," Alderson said after Monday's 3-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. "It came up this morning as far as I know. There will be some follow-up tests and consultation that will take place over the next couple of days."

Asked if there is any gravity to the undisclosed issue, Alderson added: "I think it's a little early to attach any level of concern. ... I think we need to wait for more medical information before we decide it's of concern, or great concern, or no concern."

Harvey will be scratched from Tuesday's Grapefruit League start against the Miami Marlins. That had been slated to be his final tuneup for Opening Day opposite Kansas City Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez at Kauffman Stadium in a rematch of Game Nos. 1 and 5 of the World Series.

The fact that Harvey could miss his Opening Day start and the Mets aren't saying why is a really bad sign.
