Mets Can't Be Taken Seriously Until They Reach .500

After the Dodger debacle, they needed this sweep of the Giants. But they're still 7 games under .500 and more than 10 games out of the last wild-card spot. Still, the All-Star break isn't here yet, so barring other significant injury to a key player, Terry Collins finally taking Jose Reyes out of the starting lineup and learning how to use his bullpen properly, I say that the 2017 season isn't quite over just yet.

Sergio Romo Is Interested In Being a Met

They could use a lefty, to be sure, but Blevins actually was more effective getting righthanded hitters out than lefties last season, and the Mets have righthanded relievers who have success against lefties.

Perhaps more significant, if Romo is healthy, after missing time due to an elbow injury last season, he has the most history of getting big outs, and his slider is a weapon.

“When his arm is right, he still has a plus-slider with depth that gets righties and lefties out,” one NL scout said. “He had the elbow problem last year but looked pretty good late in the season.”

Because of the elbow injury that sidelined him for most of the first half of the season, Romo pitched only 30.2 innings for the Giants in 2016, but his numbers were solid. He wasn’t nearly the biggest culprit in their bullpen problems that haunted them late in the season and in the postseason, pitching to a 1.86 ERA in September.

What with Jeurys Familia still possibly being suspended to start the season and Jerry Blevins apparently asking for too much than the Mets are willing to give him, I'm very curious as to why the Mets haven't signed Romo. The guy's stats last season were pretty good (tho he was injured for a 3rd of 2016), he's been a closer and thus knows how to handle big-game pressure situations and most importantly, not including Addison Reed, he's better than anything the Mets have in the bullpen right now. So unless there's something we don't know, the Mets need to sign Romo already, esp with the Nationals possibly wanting him too.

Mets Sweep Giants

Listen, a win is a win and a sweep is a sweep, but the Giants are one God-awful baseball team. And so is Colorado (whose coming in next), but at least they're the defending NL champs. San Francisco doesn't even belong in the majors, they're that bad.

Mets Take Series From Giants

This is what we need to keep doing: winning series, esp. what with Chase Utley and the Phillies looking to take off. Pedro had a good outing. Willie should platoon Ramon Castro and Brian Schneider (who has a ludicrous 4 extra-base hits), but he won't. Jose Reyes is hitting, but playing awful defense and Carlos Beltran is getting some big hits. One thing tho, when Moises Alou comes back, Willie should platoon him with a combo of Andy Chavez and Fernando Tatis. I'm tired of Alou's visits to the DL. Now we have to take 3 outta four from the woeful Padres.

Pedro Makes Huge Start Tonight

2006 proved that the Mets need a healthy and effective Pedro Martinez to have any chance of winning a world championship. Well, now's the time for Pedro to step up and prove that he's still got a little something left in his tank. No more excuses and if he gets injured again, maybe he should just retire and be done. He's facing a Giants team that can't hit tonight so would 6 innings, no more than 3 runs allowed be too much to ask for? I don't think so.
